SoHo, a play on words meaning South of Houston Street after London's famous shopping district, is notable for its artists and galleries. Most clients looking for space in SoHo will be retail, although it does make a trendy office location. The borders of the neighborhood (beside Houston in the North) are Lafayette Street in the East,
Canal Street to the South, and 6th Avenue to the West.
SoHo is known for its artists and galleries, a great deal having moved there in the 1970's. The neighborhood is dominated by historic cast iron architecture. It's also a token example of gentrification, where young aspiring artists moved into an industrial area because it was cheap. This in turn brought nightlife restaurants and tourists, which brought in more expensive fashion firms, making the neighborhood a hip tourist stop. While struggling artists can no longer afford to live here, well-funded small companies looking for loft offices with good natural light find it to be a nice location, with lots of local amenities, as well as easy transportation to anywhere in the city. While big firms looking for large office blocks won't belong here, that might actually appeal to some of the smaller companies.
Optimal Spaces recommends SoHo for small clients with a lot of money, as the area has become quite expensive. However, the space offered is very nice, and worth the price. Optimal Spaces specializes in small office and retail clients, and can help you find space here without breaking the bank (artists included!).
