The Madison Belmont Building, located at 183 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, NYC, was designed by Warren & Wetmore in the Neoclassical style with influences from the Art Deco style. Constructed between 1924 and 1925, it features a transitional design that combines elements of both styles. The building was originally developed as a showroom for silk companies in the Silk District of Midtown Manhattan.
The structure is 228 feet tall, with 17 stories, and an additional floor was added in 1953 for mechanical equipment and commercial space. It contains 233,484 square feet of space and includes architectural terracotta ornamentation and a large cornice. The lobby is finished in bronze and marble with a vaulted ceiling.
The building's exterior and first-floor interior were designated as New York City landmarks in 2011. Notable features include iron-and-bronze showroom frames designed by Edgar Brandt, a French ironworker known for his contributions to the Art Deco style.
Historically, the building was part of the relocated Silk District, which moved northward to Madison Avenue and 34th Street in the early 1920s. The Cheney Silk Company, a major tenant, occupied the first three floors with showrooms.
