The Solow Building, also known as 9 West 57th Street, is a prominent skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Completed in 1974, it was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The building stands 689 feet tall with 50 stories, offering magnificent views of Central Park and the Plaza Hotel.
Sheldon Solow developed the building, acquiring the site in the 1960s from multiple owners, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Construction began in 1969, and Avon Products became a major tenant, leasing a significant portion of the space. The building's design features curved facades on its north and south sides, made of gray-tinted glass, while the west and east facades are clad in travertine.
Since its completion, the Solow Building has been one of New York City's most prestigious office buildings, attracting tenants like Morgan Guaranty and Sony Corporation of America. Despite initial architectural criticism, the building's proximity to Central Park has allowed it to command high rents.
After Sheldon Solow's death in 2020, the building was inherited by his son Stefan Soloviev. The building contains about 1.5 million square feet of rentable space and includes a private art collection on the first floor and the Brasserie 8 1/2 restaurant in the basement.
