Formerly known as the Sony Tower and AT&T Building, 550 Madison Avenue is 37 stories and 647 feet tall. A Highrise skyscraper, 550 Madison Avenue is in the Plaza District of Midtown Manhattan. With a plethora of office spaces for rent in New York City, the building was formerly the headquarters of Sony Corporation of America.
The building was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee and was finished in 1984. It features a marvelous arched entrance way and an ornamental top. In July 2018 the building and its office space for rent in Plaza District, NYC became a New York City landmark by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Owned by AT&T who for a time leased part of the building to Sony, Sony bought the building outright in 2002. The Chetrit Group bought 550 Madison Avenue in 2013 for $685 million more than Sony paid for it. The Chetrit Group had planned to redevelop the building into a combination of condos and hotels but abandoned their plan and sold the building to Olayan and Chelsfield in 2016 ending the “Sony Tower” name. The new owners planned to rebrand and reconfigure the structure. In 2017, the Olayan Group moved to perform an extensive renovation that many opposed. A protest and petition ensued. A week later, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission announced a vote to consider the building for landmark status. Despite the fight to retain its history, the Olayan Group began demolishing parts of the lobby in January 2018. Finally, on July 31st, 2018, the Landmarks Commission voted unanimously to designate the exterior of 550 Madison Avenue a New York City Landmark.
Aside from its rich history and unique classification as a landmark, 550 Madison Avenue is a fantastic building for office space for rent in New York because of its easy access to Midtown amenities, and proximity to numerous transit stops.
