The American Surety Building, located at 100 Broadway in Manhattan, New York City, was constructed between 1894 and 1896. Designed by architect Bruce Price, it was one of the first buildings in Manhattan to utilize steel framing and curtain wall construction. Initially, it stood as a 21-story office building, reaching a height of 312 feet, making it the second tallest building in New York City at the time.
Between 1920 and 1922, the building underwent significant renovations, including the acquisition of the adjacent Schermerhorn Building site. Two additional floors were added, increasing the building's height to 388 feet. The neoclassical design features classical sculptural figures at the third story, created by J. Massey Rhind.
In 1973, Thomson Realty Company acquired the building, and it was renovated for the Bank of Tokyo. The building was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1997.
Today, the American Surety Building is known for its historical significance and architectural style, standing as a prominent structure in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan.
