History of 300 Park Avenue South, Manhattan, NYC
300 Park Avenue South, originally known as the Mills & Gibb Building and now also called The Creative Arts Center, is a historic 16-story Beaux-Arts style building located on the northwest corner of East 22nd Street in Manhattan's Flatiron District and Gramercy Park neighborhoods.
The building was designed by the architectural firm Starrett & van Vleck and was completed in 1911. It was constructed for the Mills & Gibb company on the site previously occupied by the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church.
With a frontage of 114 feet on Fourth Avenue and 100 feet on Twenty-second Street, the building was notable for its ornamental iron partitions glazed with wire mesh glass, provided by the Winslow Brothers' Company, and "Richardson" seamless kalamein fire doors designed to protect the passenger elevator shaft. Its entire steel frame was fireproofed with terra cotta hollow tile supplied by Henry Maurer & Son.
The building featured advanced safety features for its time, including automatic sprinklers supplied with water by two steel pressure tanks with a capacity of 9,000 US gallons each, housed in a fireproof structure on the roof.
Today, 300 Park Avenue South hosts a variety of tenants including cultural and arts organizations such as the Smithsonian Institution's New York Research Center, the New York State Council on the Arts, Wilhelmina Models, FanDuel, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
