The house at 350 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, NYC, was built in 1856 on former farmland owned by the Astor family. It was gifted to Caroline Schermerhorn Astor and her husband, William Backhouse Astor, after their marriage. The building was a plain four-story town house, featuring Nova Scotia freestone in window dressings, architraves, cornices, Corinthian columns, and a double stoop. Despite its understated exterior, the interior was lavishly decorated and hosted many social events, including Mrs. Astor's annual January ball.
The house was part of the most fashionable residential area in the Gilded Age. A fenced-in garden on the left side was shared with the neighboring house occupied by William's brother, John Jacob Astor III. After Mrs. Astor's brother-in-law built the Waldorf Hotel nearby, she and her son sold the house and moved to a new mansion at 840-841 Fifth Avenue.
