The building at 1 West 72nd Street, known as The Dakota, is a legendary cooperative apartment complex on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in the German Renaissance style, it was constructed between 1880 and 1884 for Edward Cabot Clark. The Dakota was one of the first large developments on the Upper West Side and remains the oldest luxury apartment building in New York City.

Initially named for its then-remote location, The Dakota was built during a time when multifamily living was considered middle-class. To attract affluent residents, Clark included upscale features such as high ceilings (ranging from 15.5 to 12 feet) and luxurious materials like mahogany, oak, and cherry for the floors. Each apartment was unique, with between five and twenty rooms, and some included private dining rooms and kitchens. The building also featured a restaurant and private dining rooms on the main floor.

The Dakota has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976 and a New York City landmark since 1969. It is part of the Central Park West Historic District. Over the years, it has been home to numerous cultural icons, including John Lennon, Lauren Bacall, and Leonard Bernstein. The building gained further notoriety as the filming location for 'Rosemary's Baby' and the site of John Lennon's assassination in 1980.

Today, The Dakota continues to offer a prime location, overlooking Central Park and featuring high security and modern amenities like a 24-hour doorman and concierge service. Despite its historic status, it remains an exclusive residence, with a cooperative board known for being selective about new residents.
