2273 Broadway, located at the southwest corner of Broadway and West 82nd Street, is part of The Saxony, a significant Beaux-Arts building designed by the architectural firm Stein, Cohen & Roth. The Saxony was completed in 1900 and is notable for being the first apartment building designed by the prominent architect Emery Roth. The building was commissioned by developer Albert Saxe with an estimated construction cost of $200,000, equivalent to about $6.7 million today.

The seven-story brick and stone semi-fireproof flat features a two-story rusticated stone base housing retail stores along Broadway. The residential entrance, originally on 82nd Street, was designed with tall lampposts and sheltered by a glass-and-iron canopy. Each apartment included nine rooms, two bathrooms, butler's pantries, and private halls, reflecting the social and financial status of its residents.

Over the years, The Saxony underwent significant changes. Initially, apartments were large and luxurious, but by 1945, many had been converted into single room occupancy spaces. In the late 1960s, the building began to be reconverted into cooperative apartments, regaining much of its original grandeur by the 1970s.
