243 West End Avenue, originally known as the Hotel Cardinal, was built in 1925. It was later also referred to as the Coliseum Plaza. The building was designed by renowned architect Emery Roth and features a Renaissance Revival style with Spanish Colonial Revival elements.

Initially, it operated as an apartment hotel, offering "complete one-room apartments" that provided the comfort of a spacious apartment in a single room, complete with a foyer, serving pantry, and bath.
