Constructed between 1912 and 1916 for AT&T after its acquisition of Western Union, this 29-story, 422-foot-tall (129 m) Beaux-Arts skyscraper was designed to comply with the 1916 Zoning Resolution. The 195 Broadway Corporation acquired adjacent plots preemptively, including the Mail and Express Building (1916) and 205 Broadway (1916), to ensure zoning compliance and integrate subway access via agreements with the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT). Architect William Welles Bosworth planned three 27-story annexes post-construction, delayed by World War I material shortages and property holdouts.
