The eastern blockfront of Columbus Avenue between 67th and 68th Streets initially developed with small shops and brownstone houses. In 1878, Anderson Fowler, a lard merchant, commissioned Scottish immigrant architects David and James Jardine to build five four-story brownstone dwellings on the northwest corner of 67th Street and Ninth (later Columbus) Avenue.

By the early 20th century, the area was bustling with businesses. Notable establishments included J. T. Finn & Co., a substantial plumbing business operating from the second floor of 161 Columbus Avenue. They installed a "steam and hot water heating system" in Charles M. Schwab's Riverside Drive mansion in 1904.

Over the years, the buildings underwent changes. By 1942, the Manhattan Automobile Exchange had vacated the corner store, and it was replaced by The Thomas Pharmacy, which included a luncheonette. Friedrich's art shop remained in the building alongside other businesses like a hardware and furniture store.

In the mid-20th century, the property changed hands several times. A significant transformation occurred in 1983 when a father-and-son development team announced plans for a 32-story condominium. Today, the area continues to evolve with modern businesses.
