The building was renowned as the largest apartment building in the United States upon its completion. It features a large landscaped courtyard accessible through arched entrances on 86th Street.

The Belnord was designated as a New York City landmark in 1966 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years, it has undergone significant renovations, including a major restoration by Gary Barnett's Extell Development Company in the 1990s.
