2651-2657 Broadway, Manhattan, NYC has a rich historical background. Originally, developers Dongan & Taylor hired Janes & Leo in 1899 to design a seven-story brick and stone apartment building at this location. However, within two months, the vacant plot was acquired by Smith & Roffler, who instead commissioned Neville & Bagge to design the structure.
The building, completed in 1910, is a neo-Renaissance style structure faced in brown brick above a one-story rusticated stone base. Its design includes stores along the Broadway side and a dignified entrance under a columned portico at 230 West 101st Street. The architects incorporated rounded corners on the upper floors, adding windows for enhanced views up the avenue. The facade features Renaissance-inspired details such as window pediments, quoins, and layered keystones.
Early commercial tenants included the Hegeman & Co. drugstore at 2653 Broadway. The building initially housed 26 apartments, offering suites of seven or eight rooms and a bath. It later became known as the Broadway Hotel & Hostel.
In 2021, Long Island-based developer Klosed Properties purchased the building for $15.5 million with plans to redevelop it into a class A residential building. The site came with significant air rights and plans to upgrade retail spaces.
2651-2657 Broadway is a historic building located in Manhattan's Upper West Side neighborhood. It was built in 1910 and features seven stories. The building is also known by its alternate addresses, including 230 West 101st Street. Recently, Klosed Properties acquired the property from Hank Freid for $15.5 million. The building is currently 96% vacant and includes five Single Room Occupancy (SRO) tenants. The purchase included 14,300 square feet of air rights above the building.
