1010 Park Avenue, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is a historic site with a rich architectural and religious history. The original building was designed by the firm Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson in 1911 for the South Dutch Reformed Church. The design was inspired by La Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, featuring a Gothic Revival style with a 70-foot spire and buttresses that allow it to stand without steel girding.
The stained glass windows include work by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Mary Elizabeth Tillinghast. After the South Dutch Reformed Church disbanded in 1914, the building underwent several transformations. It became the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, then was home to the Betina Evangelical Church from about 1940 to 1945. In 1945, it was purchased by the Central Christian Church and renamed the Park Avenue Christian Church.
A significant restoration of the sanctuary was completed in 1993. In 2015, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a development plan involving the demolition of the church's 1963 annex to build a 16-story residential tower. The new building, completed in 2019, incorporates community facility space for the church and residential apartments, blending with the historic neighborhood architecture.
