The construction cost was approximately $1.2 million, equivalent to about $19 million today. However, the building faced financial difficulties soon after its completion, leading to a foreclosure in 1930. In 1945, RKO-Pathe News acquired the building and converted it into a film studio and laboratory, becoming known as the Pathe Building. During its tenure, NBC-TV used the facility for newsreel processing and produced shows such as "The Howdy Doody Show."

Throughout the years, the building has hosted various tenants and uses. In the 1970s, Astral Recording Studios operated from the fifth floor, offering recording opportunities for artists and employing members of the LGBTQ+ community. By the 2000s, Metropolis Studios took over, hosting notable artists and serving as the original location for BET's "106th & Park." Today, the building houses the Young Women’s Leadership School, an all-girls high school established in 1996.

Despite its many transformations, the building's façade has remained remarkably intact. It is currently undergoing exterior renovations, maintaining its status as an architectural and cultural icon of East Harlem.
