The Copper, formerly known as American Copper Buildings, are located at 626 First Avenue in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighborhood. The site was originally a lot hosting the Consolidated Edison Kips Bay Generating Station and was part of a large redevelopment plan by Sheldon Solow, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. This plan included a seven-tower complex with a park and a public school. However, Solow sold the land to JDS and Largo in 2013, leading to the construction of a twin-tower structure, which was designed by SHoP Architects.
Construction began in mid-2014, with copper cladding applied starting in mid-2015. The towers topped out in late 2015 and early 2016, and a skybridge connecting them was installed in January 2016. The skybridge spans three floors and features a bar, lounge, a 75-foot lap pool, yoga studio, catering kitchen, juice and health bar, and a fitness center with climbing wall. The building officially opened in 2017.
The Copper consists of two undulating copper-clad towers, each part of a 48-story structure with 761 residences. The neighborhood of Murray Hill has a rich history, named after a prominent merchant Robert Murray, who built an estate known as Inclenburg in the area during the mid-1700s.
