1 Broadway, located at the intersection of Battery Place and Broadway in Manhattan, New York City, has a rich and varied history. The site once hosted two taverns, including the "Knocks Tavern", around the mid-17th century. Later, it became the location of a home for British Captain Archibald Kennedy, built in the late 1760s. During the Revolutionary War, this house served as headquarters for Continental Army generals, including George Washington.
The current building was initially constructed in 1882 as the Washington Building, designed by Edward H. Kendall in the Queen Anne style. It was part of early skyscraper development in New York City. In 1919, the International Mercantile Marine Company (IMM) purchased and renovated the building to a Neoclassical design by Walter B. Chambers, finishing the makeover by 1922. The structure served as IMM's headquarters until 1979.
Today, 1 Broadway is recognized as a historic landmark, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and designated a city landmark in 1995. It continues to evolve with modern renovations while maintaining its historic charm.
