17 Battery Place, also known as the Whitehall Building, is a historic structure located in Manhattan's Financial District. The original building was constructed between 1902 and 1904 and designed by the renowned architect Henry J. Hardenbergh in a Renaissance Revival style. This 20-story office building was named after the seventeenth-century home of Peter Stuyvesant, called "the White Hall," which once stood nearby.

The building's site was part of early land reclamation efforts along the Hudson River, with landfill used to extend Manhattan's usable land. Developed by Robert A. and William H. Chesebrough, the Whitehall Building was built as a speculative office tower and quickly became successful upon its 1904 completion. The structure incorporates a bold design and dramatic color scheme to complement its prominent location at the southern tip of Manhattan overlooking Battery Park.

In 1908–1910, a 31-story annex was added facing West Street, designed by Clinton & Russell architects, making the entire complex one of the largest office buildings in New York City at the time. The annex continued the Renaissance Revival façade with materials such as granite, brick, limestone, and ornamental terracotta. Both original and annex buildings reflect the architectural articulation of classical columns through their base, shaft, and capital design elements.

Constructed with early steel-frame technology, the building was among the oldest of its size utilizing structural steel. It has undergone several renovations, most notably a major restoration from 1993 to 1996 that addressed its envelope and preserved its historic architectural details. Recently, restoration work completed in 2024 further revitalized the building’s Renaissance Revival exterior, including the replication of ornamental terracotta and carved limestone elements using modern materials approved by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Designated a New York City Landmark in 2000, 17 Battery Place remains a significant architectural and historical landmark on Manhattan's southern tip, blending commercial and residential usage while serving as a gateway to the Financial District and Battery Park.
