Higgins, a carpet merchant and real estate developer. The structure is notable for its marble front and Italianate style, featuring two identical facades with cast-iron storefronts, deeply coursed piers, and superimposed tiers of double-height arcades. Initially, it housed companies such as Calhoun, Robbins & Co., importers of fancy dry goods and small wares.
The building has undergone several renovations, with significant updates in 1950 and again in 2008. The latter renovation accommodated a trade school and offices. Despite structural changes over the years, the building's original marble façade remains largely intact, although some decorative elements like the Corinthian capitals have been lost.
