Geographic Boundaries

42nd Street goes all the way across Midtown Manhattan, from the Hudson River on the West Side to the East River near Turtle Bay, a distance of about 2.0 miles (3.2 km). The West Side Highway (NY 9A) is its western end. It goes through Hell's Kitchen, Times Square, and Murray Hill before ending at the FDR Drive near the United Nations headquarters. The street is a major crosstown artery that crosses Broadway, 5th Avenue, Park Avenue, and other streets.

Businesses, Stores, and Retailers

There are a lot of different stores, entertainment options, and hotels on 42nd Street. The eastern part of Times Square (42nd St/Broadway) has flagship stores like the Disney Store and Hershey's Chocolate World, as well as themed restaurants and souvenir shops. There are ticket booths and gift shops for Broadway fans in the Theatre District between 8th and 6th Avenues. There are a lot of upscale restaurants near Grand Central Terminal, and some of them, like The Campbell Bar and Cipriani Dolci, are in historic buildings.

History of Major Attractions

The 1811 Commissioners' Plan started the street's change, but it didn't become famous until the early 1900s. Off-Broadway theaters in Theatre Row come from converted early 1900s tenements west of 8th Avenue.

Other Significant Buildings

Apart from the recognizable areas, 42nd Street contains the old Bank of America Building (8th Avenue), which has the murals from the Great Depression period. The Pershing Square Building, which overlooks the south plaza of Grand Central Terminal, the Durst Organization's 1133 Avenue of the Americas occupies the financial district section of the street. The United Nations Secretariat Building actually sits on 1st Avenue, but it can be considered the east end of 42nd Street.

Transportation Hub

There are more underground stations on 42nd Street than any other street in New York City: Bryant Park (B,D,F,M), Grand Central (4,5,6,7,S), and Times Square (42nd St., A,C,E,N,Q,R,W,1,2,3,7). Every year, 65 million passengers use the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue. Ferries connect from Pier 76 on the East River, and cross-town M42 buses travel the entire length of the street.
