Following Opdyke's death in 1880, the mansion was purchased by Jay Gould, a prominent railroad tycoon, for $250,000. Gould refurbished the house with the help of the Herter Brothers and moved in with his family in 1882.

It had a main entrance under a portico, leading to a deep vestibule with carved oaken doors and a mosaic floor.
