History of 985 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, NYC
985 Fifth Avenue is a notable site with a rich architectural history located in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Originally, the location was occupied by a pair of twin townhouses built for the sons of Isaac Vail Brokaw, a pioneering clothing merchant descended from one of the city's oldest families. The first of these townhouses, at 985 Fifth Avenue, was designed in the François I style by architect Charles F. Rose for Mrs. and Ms. Irving Brokaw, members of a prominent New York family and national figure skating champions. These twin residences were constructed around the turn of the 20th century.
The area was home to additional ornate mansions and townhouses, including those at 986 and 987 Fifth Avenue, which contributed to the historic character of the neighborhood. Despite the significance of these structures, they were demolished in the late 1960s, a loss that occurred shortly after New York City's 1965 Landmarks Law was enacted in response to the destruction of historically significant buildings like Pennsylvania Station.
The existing 25-story apartment building at 985 Fifth Avenue, designed by architects Wechsler & Schimenti, was constructed between 1969 and 1970. This building featured a façade marked by balconies, glass, and glazed brick, replacing the original Brokaw townhouses and nearby historic residences. The redevelopment was carried out by Bernard Spitzer, father of Eliot Spitzer, who acquired the properties in that period.
While the original mansions were lost, their demolition helped spur the preservation movement within the neighborhood, leading to the designation of the Metropolitan Museum Historic District, which protects many of the parkside blocks today. The site continues to stand as a symbol of the evolving architectural landscape of Fifth Avenue and the Upper East Side.
