42nd Street

Geographic Boundaries

42nd Street goes all the way across Midtown Manhattan, from the Hudson River on the West Side to the East River near Turtle Bay, a distance of about 2.0 miles (3.2 km). The West Side Highway (NY 9A) is its western end. It goes through Hell's Kitchen, Times Square, and Murray Hill before ending at the FDR Drive near the United Nations headquarters. The street is a major crosstown artery that crosses Broadway, 5th Avenue, Park Avenue, and other streets.

Businesses, Stores, and Retailers

There are a lot of different stores, entertainment options, and hotels on 42nd Street. The eastern part of Times Square (42nd St/Broadway) has flagship stores like the Disney Store and Hershey's Chocolate World, as well as themed restaurants and souvenir shops. There are ticket booths and gift shops for Broadway fans in the Theatre District between 8th and 6th Avenues. There are a lot of upscale restaurants near Grand Central Terminal, and some of them, like The Campbell Bar and Cipriani Dolci, are in historic buildings.

History of Major Attractions

The 1811 Commissioners' Plan started the street's change, but it didn't become famous until the early 1900s. The Chrysler Building (1930) became an Art Deco landmark, and Grand Central Terminal (1913) changed the way people travelled to and from work. The Main Branch of the New York Public Library, which opened in 1911, made it a cultural centre. Before the 1990s revitalisation, which brought family-friendly places like Madame Tussauds and the New 42nd Street studios, the neon-lit theatres in Times Square were the most popular places to go for entertainment in the middle of the century.

Architectural Diversity

TEvery significant architectural style from the 20th century is represented in this corridor. The Chrysler Building's stainless steal crown plays off the Beaux-Arts monumentality of Grand Central Terminal. One Vanderbilt (2020) and the glass-clad 1095 Avenue of the Americas sit next to Art Moderne buildings like the former Newsweek Building. Off-Broadway theaters in Theatre Row come from converted early 1900s tenements west of 8th Avenue.

Other Significant Buildings

Apart from the recognizable areas, 42nd Street contains the old Bank of America Building (8th Avenue), which has the murals from the Great Depression period. The Pershing Square Building, which overlooks the south plaza of Grand Central Terminal, the Durst Organization's 1133 Avenue of the Americas occupies the financial district section of the street. The United Nations Secretariat Building actually sits on 1st Avenue, but it can be considered the east end of 42nd Street.

Transportation Hub

There are more underground stations on 42nd Street than any other street in New York City: Bryant Park (B,D,F,M), Grand Central (4,5,6,7,S), and Times Square (42nd St., A,C,E,N,Q,R,W,1,2,3,7). Every year, 65 million passengers use the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue. Ferries connect from Pier 76 on the East River, and cross-town M42 buses travel the entire length of the street.

Zip Codes

The main zip codes along 42nd Street are 10168 (the area around Grand Central Station), 10017 (Midtown East), 10018 (Garment District), and 10036 (Times Square). The adjacent postal zones are 10022 (Turtle Bay east of 2nd Avenue) and 10019 (Hell's Kitchen west of 9th Avenue).

Corporate Presence

The corridor includes multinational headquarters from various sectors: MetLife (insurance) at 1095 Avenue of the Americas, Chanel (luxury products) at 125 W 42nd, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges (law); all of which are notably located in the vicinity of Bryant Park. Tech companies (such as T-Mobile) rented facilities near the congestion of Midtown and Times Square, which has an abundance of media conglomerates such as Conde Nast and Nasdaq, that secured lucrative marketing outposts in modern buildings, namely One World Trade Center.

Economic Sectors

The segment east of 5th Avenue is dominated by finance, as evidenced by banks like JPMorgan Chase (near Grand Central). The entertainment industry is concentrated around Times Square and includes a mix of production companies and talent agencies. Hospitality is served through hotel chains like the Hyatt Grand Central and intercontinental Times Square. Nonprofits (e.g., Ford Foundation) have in recent decades clustered near the United Nations complex.
