The Everett Building, located at 200 Park Avenue South at the northwest corner with East 17th Street in Manhattan's Union Square, is a 16-story commercial structure that opened in 1908. Designed by the architectural firm Starrett & van Vleck, with Goldwin Starrett as the lead architect, the building reflects the functionalist philosophy influenced by Daniel Burnham, emphasizing fireproof construction with open plan interiors and simple classical exteriors.
The site was originally part of a colonial farm owned by Dutch settler Cornelius Tiebout. Union Square was established in the early 19th century, evolving from a park surrounded by mansions to a major commercial and transportation hub by the early 20th century. The Everett House hotel, which once stood on the site, was a notable landmark before being sold and demolished in 1907 to make way for the new office building.
Construction of the Everett Building began in September 1908 and progressed rapidly, with initial tenant occupancy reported by December the same year. The building quickly became popular for its industrial loft and office space, attracting tenants from the cotton, dry-goods, wool, and silk industries due to its relatively affordable rents compared to nearby Fifth Avenue locations.
Among its early occupants were silk sellers William Skinner and Sons, the American Association of Woolen and Worsted Manufacturers, and various other textile and manufacturing companies. Over the decades, the building also housed reform and charitable organizations, including the New York Police Department's Civilian Complaint Review Board during the 1970s and 1980s.
In 1988, the Everett Building was designated an official New York City landmark, recognized alongside the Germania Life Insurance Company Building (now the W New York Union Square hotel) as forming an imposing architectural terminus to Park Avenue South. The building remains a significant architectural and historical piece in the Union Square area, exemplifying early 20th-century commercial design and urban development.
