34th Street

Geographic Boundaries

34th Street traverses almost the entire width of Manhattan, from the West Side Highway along the Hudson River to FDR Drive along the East Side, and is an important crosstown route between the Lincoln Tunnel (west) and Queens-Midtown Tunnel (east). 34th Street’s commercial corridor exists mainly between Fifth Avenue and Eighth Avenue. The official 34th Street District contains 31 blocks in Midtown Manhattan, while 34th Street itself passes through a number of neighborhoods including Hudson Yards, Penn Station, and Kips Bay.

Businesses, Stores & Retailers

Macy's Herald Square - the largest department store in the world - serves as an anchor for this retail corridor just near Broadway. Large flagship stores such as Zara, H&M, and Old Navy surround Herald Square; upscale boutiques and specialty stores tend to be close to Fifth Avenue. The Hudson Yards complex at the western terminus contains luxury brands like Cartier and Dior. Food halls like Urbanspace Vanderbilt near Grand Central train station and vendors that cater to both office workers and tourists, give visitors plenty of options.

Fine Dining Establishments

Keens Steakhouse has been around since 1885 and is still the best place to get dry-aged beef around Sixth Avenue. More recent options include The Smith at 1180 Broadway, which is nearly a carbon copy of a London pub and Haven Rooftop located in the Sanctuary Hotel, which emphasizes seasonal ingredients and farm-to-table cuisine. The most popular power lunches in Midtown are typically found in small local spots in proximity to major corporate towers. Restaurants with refined dining settings typically serve denser menus; especially for large parties. Speakeasy-style bars, a number of which serve craft cocktails, and rooftop lounges are providing options for the after-hours crowds.

Historical Attractions

The Empire State Building (1931) towers over the skyline of the area at Fifth Avenue, and the original 1902 Pennsylvania Station (remodeled to an underground densification in 1963) shaped transportation thirty-fourth Street in many ways. The 1910 James Farley Post Office is now the Moynihan Train Hall. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade started in 1924 and concludes at Herald Square with the teams of giant balloons the parade is known for.

Architectural Landscape

The street composition involves a combination of Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, and present-day glass towers. The Empire State Building is setback-style Art Deco. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (1986), a brutalist design, occupies two blocks adjacent to the Hudson. Other recent involvement is Hudson Yards' spiral-shaped Vessel and its crystalline 10 Hudson Yards office tower.

Transportation Infrastructure

The 1/2/3 at Penn Station (34th St), the B/D/F/M at Herald Square (34th St), and the 7 trains at Hudson Yards (34th St) are all accessible by underground. NJ Transit trains stop at Penn Station, and the M34/M34A Select Bus Service offers crosstown routes. On the north and south sides of the street are bike lanes and Citi Bike stations.

Postal Codes

The primary ZIP codes are 10016 (east of Madison Avenue), 10121 (commercial high-rises), and 10001 (west of 5th Avenue). Some buildings use proprietary ZIPs for large tenants, and adjacent codes stretch into Chelsea (10011) and Murray Hill (10010).

Corporate Presence

Warner Bros. Discovery, BlackRock and L'Oréal USA have office space in towers located not far from Penn Station. Tech companies Meta and Salesforce occupy space at Hudson Yards. Healthcare conglomerate Pfizer occupies 235 E 42nd St as their headquarters. European banks and Asian trading companies have regional headquarters on the same street.
