421 Seventh Avenue, located at the northeast corner of Seventh Avenue and 33rd Street in Manhattan, was completed in 1927. The building was designed by architect William Van Alen, who was independently hired by the Childs Real Estate Company, a sister business of the Childs Unique Dairy Company known for its early restaurant chains in the United States. Van Alen, who later famously designed the Chrysler Building, had previously worked with Childs on a nearby project at 377 Fifth Avenue.
The 14-story office building initially housed a diverse group of tenants including the Cutler Realty Co., the New York offices of the National Highway Users Conference, the Diamond Die Company of America, and the National Radio Associates. In 1928, tenants also included CoMo Modes, Inc., a company following a direct sales model employing housewives to market dresses from their homes.
In 1945, the Childs Real Estate Company sold the property to Arnold Gumowitz but retained the lease for its restaurant space. Throughout the mid-20th century, it continued to accommodate a range of offices such as real estate firms, medical professionals, export companies, and civil liberties organizations like the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee and the group Youth Against the House Un-American Activities Committee, reflecting the building's connection to notable political and social movements.
By 1980, a large billboard was installed, significantly obscuring Van Alen's architectural design, with further signage and awnings altering the building's original appearance. Later tenants included the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership and the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation.
From 2012, the building was home to the Houdini Museum of New York on its third floor, a unique attraction embedded within a magic shop headquarters producing trick cards, coins, and other magical paraphernalia.
