The Tower Building, located at 50 Broadway in Manhattan, New York City, holds a significant place in architectural history. Designed by architect Bradford Lee Gilbert, it was completed in 1889 and considered one of New York's first skyscrapers due to its innovative use of metal-cage construction. This structure was remarkably slender, with a frontage of only 21.5 feet on Broadway, yet it rose to a height of 11 stories and 128 feet. The building's design involved a hybrid system where the first seven stories used a steel skeleton, while the top four levels were constructed with traditional masonry to support the walls. This design allowed for more open floor space and larger windows.
Although the Tower Building was not the tallest in New York at the time of its completion, it paved the way for future skyscrapers like the Woolworth and Singer buildings. However, by 1913, it became obsolete due to the rising popularity of taller and more advanced structures. The building was vacated and demolished between 1913 and 1914.
Bradford Gilbert's contribution to New York City's architecture extends beyond the Tower Building. He also worked on other notable projects, such as the YMCA building at 222 Bowery and the original Grand Central Terminal. Gilbert's experience with railroad depots inspired the innovative framework of the Tower Building, likened to an iron bridge turned on its end.
