The site of 680 Fifth Avenue was once home to the Webb mansion, a Victorian architectural marvel designed by John B. Snook. The mansion featured a mix of historical styles, including stepped Flemish gables and French Renaissance towers.

In 1917, the mansion was demolished to make way for a modern building. John D. Rockefeller purchased the property, reportedly for $1.25 million, with plans to replace it with a six-story business structure.

The new building was completed and became part of the Rockefeller Building complex after John D. Rockefeller, Jr. acquired the adjacent property at 684 Fifth Avenue in 1925. The old mansion was replaced by a seamlessly matching extension of the structure that replaced the Webb house.
