It was designed by architect Cyrus L. W. Eidlitz in the Classical Revival style. This 12-story office building replaced the Worth House, a mid-19th century brick hotel, and is part of the Madison Square North Historic District.

Cyrus L. W. Eidlitz, the son of influential New York architect Leopold Eidlitz and educated in New York and Europe, was a prominent architect of his time. He is also known for designing notable buildings including the original One Times Square and several early telephone and industrial buildings. The Townsend Building exemplifies Eidlitz’s restrained classical architectural approach and stands as a significant example of late 19th-century commercial architecture in New York City.
