The Bennett Building, located at 139 Fulton Street in Manhattan's Financial District, is a notable landmark in New York City. Constructed between 1872 and 1873 by architect Arthur D. Gilman in the French Second Empire style, it was originally a six-story structure commissioned by James Gordon Bennett Jr., publisher of the New York Herald. The building featured a cast-iron façade, which was typical of the era, and was designed to provide modern office spaces.

Between 1890 and 1892, the building underwent significant expansions under the guidance of architect James M. Farnsworth. Farnsworth removed the original mansard roof and added four stories, bringing the building to ten stories high. This renovation included installing new elevators and mechanical systems, transforming it into one of the tallest cast-iron buildings of its time.

In 1889, real estate investor John Pettit acquired the building for $1.6 million and further expanded it with an eleven-story annex on Ann Street in 1894. Over the years, the ownership of the Bennett Building changed hands several times. Notable owners included George B. Wilson, whose family held the property through the 1940s.

The building was designated as a New York City landmark on November 21, 1995, and is part of the Fulton–Nassau Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Its cast-iron façade, which faces Fulton, Nassau, and Ann Streets, makes it a significant example of Second Empire architecture in Lower Manhattan.
