195-197 Chrystie Street, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, possesses a rich historical context. The site was originally part of the second African American burial ground, established in 1795 at the west side of Chrystie Street, between Stanton and Rivington Streets. This burial ground was used by the African Society, a group of free black Episcopalians, to bury Black individuals of all denominations and statuses in New York City.

In 1827, the ownership of the burial ground was transferred to the trustees of St. Philip's Church, an African American Episcopal parish founded in 1809. The cemetery remained in use until 1835, when it became full, leading to the interment of remains in shallower graves than legally permitted. In 1852, St. Philip's sold the cemetery property and, in 1853, reinterred remains at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.

The original cemetery site at Chrystie Street was redeveloped. The current building at 195-197 Chrystie Street was constructed in 1920 and features a nine-story structure. In 2006, during excavations for a nearby construction project, human bone fragments were discovered, believed to be remnants from the historical burial ground.
