Originally, a 27-foot wide residence was erected by William P. Earle at No. 26 East 23rd Street in 1853, but it appears there was a mix-up in addresses. However, the building at 26 West 23rd Street saw significant changes over time. In 1875, the upper floors were operated as a boarding house, and by the late 1800s, the building began transforming into commercial use.

A notable event occurred in 1887 when William P. Earle renovated the structure with interior updates and elevator installations. Merwin, Hulbert & Co., known for firearms and sporting goods, leased the building in April 1887.

The building underwent substantial renovations in the early 20th century. Completed in 1920, the structure was transformed with a neo-Tudor style white terra cotta facade, featuring a crenellated parapet and heraldic shield. The renovations resulted in a six-story building with vast glass expanses.

Throughout its history, 26 West 23rd Street has housed various tenants, including Theodore Haviland & Co., which was known for fine china and remained there until 1951.

Today, the building stands as a testament to the evolving nature of Manhattan's commercial landscape.
