The building was originally designed by Thomas Stent for the Astor family, featuring a six-story structure with "tin roofs and iron cornices" at a projected cost of $350,000.

The building's architectural style blended the Commercial Palace Style with Ruskinian touches, showcasing red brick with contrasting stone and polished granite colonettes. It was initially home to Rogers, Peet & Co., a men's and boys' clothing store, and later became a hub for hat dealers and other millinery businesses.

In 1996, the building was remodeled by Arata Isozaki to house the Guggenheim SoHo museum. However, the museum closed in 1999, and part of the space was converted into a Prada store. In 2015, the building underwent a significant facade restoration project, including the replacement of its roof and the refurbishment of its ornate facades.
