726-730 Broadway, located in the heart of Manhattan's Greenwich Village, is a significant historical building. It was completed in 1919 as a 10-story Neo-Classical office building designed by William Steele & Sons. Initially, the building served as a garage, factory, and warehouse for John Wanamaker's department store, which was situated two blocks north on Broadway.
The building's design features a two-story terra-cotta base with rusticated piers and crown molding. The entrances on both Broadway and Lafayette Streets have grey granite facing. The brown brick upper floors include projecting piers with quoins and terra-cotta lintels in continuous bands. A three-story rooftop addition, completed around 1980, was constructed atop the original structure.
Prior to the current building, the site was once home to various theaters. In the early 19th century, the Broadway Atheneum Theatre operated here, later transitioning through several other theatrical establishments. A fire in 1884 destroyed the theater, and the site remained vacant until plans for an "Old London Street" development were proposed.
In recent years, the building has been associated with New York University (NYU). In 2008, NYU purchased the building for $210 million. It now houses NYU's Student Health Center, Liberal Studies program, and College of Global Public Health offices. The ground floor hosts the NYU Bookstore, while the top floors were renovated in 2018 to create an atrium-focused space for the CAS physics department.
This building is also known as 418-426 Lafayette Street, located in the NoHo Historic District. It is a 10-story building with a mix of uses such as office space, health centers, and educational facilities.
