The conference center was designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and is one of his few remaining designs in the United States.
The IIE building, a 14-story glass-walled structure, was designed by Harrison, Abramovitz & Harris. It features about 100,000 square feet of floor space and includes a 300-person meeting area on the 12th floor, where the Kaufmann Conference Center is located.
In 1998, the building was sold to a group backed by Japanese financiers. Despite efforts to preserve the conference center as a landmark, it was not designated as such due to its private nature.
