History of 362 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, NYC

The building at 362 Fifth Avenue, known as part of the Knickerbocker Trust Company complex, dates back to the early 20th century. The 12-story structure was completed in 1901, designed by prominent architects of the era. It formed the southern portion of a combined office building complex alongside 358 Fifth Avenue.

Originally, the Knickerbocker Trust Company Building was built as a 5-story Beaux-Arts style office building in 1904, with an additional nine floors added in 1921. The 362 Fifth Avenue building itself was designed by Augustus D. Shepard, Jr., while the adjoining southern building was designed by the prestigious firm McKim, Mead & White. In 1958, the two buildings were joined by a shared 5-story base, which altered the original Roman temple-style design of McKim, Mead & White’s structure, replacing it with a smooth, unornamented facade.

The building's base is clad in polished black granite with large display windows, featuring a double-height entrance facing north on Fifth Avenue and another entrance on 34th Street. The midsection of the base was remodeled in 1958 with grey stone cladding. The upper floors exhibit paired windows with architectural details such as metal spandrels and a projecting roof cornice with carved stone friezes.

The history of the Knickerbocker Trust Company itself is notable for its role in the financial downturn preceding the establishment of the Federal Reserve System in 1913. The company faced collapse during the banking crisis but reopened soon after, paying off all depositors with interest. In 1912, it merged with Columbia Trust Company to form Columbia-Knickerbocker Trust Company, which was later acquired by Irving Trust Corporation in 1923, and ultimately became part of the Bank of New York in 1989.

362 Fifth Avenue remains a significant example of early 20th-century commercial architecture in Manhattan and is part of the historic fabric of Fifth Avenue’s development as a major business corridor.

362 Fifth Avenue is an office and medical building located in the Penn Plaza/Garment area of Manhattan, NYC, known for its interconnecting floors with 358 Fifth Avenue. The building features 12 stories and was originally built in 1901, classified as a Class B property. It is situated near several major subway lines, including the 34th Street Herald Square and 33rd Street PATH stations. The building offers a range of office spaces from small suites to entire floors, with varying rental rates and terms.

C2 Media Testimonial

C2 Media testimonial To Whom It May Concern: I would like to highly commend Robert King for his professional assistance in helping me locate a new corporate office. Locating the right space takes time, and I was impressed with Robert’s patience not only with myself but with my overseas executives. He never tired of our endless meetings and requests. We found a space we love. And in spite of us concluding our deal, Robert every so often comes by to chat and make sure all is going well professionably and personally. I enthusiastically recommend Robert and Optimal Spaces to anyone looking for space in New York City. Sincerely, Evelyn Pabon Product and Sales Manager C2 Inc. - Contempo Group
