135 Bowery, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, has a complex history. Initially built around 1819 or 1818, it was a three-and-a-half-story Federal-style row house with a wooden frame and brick façade laid in Flemish bond. The building featured a peaked roof with twin gabled dormers and an original end chimney.
Historically, 135 Bowery was the primary residence of John A Hardenbrook, a soap and candle manufacturer. Over the years, it housed various businesses, including a milliner, gambling dive, barbershop, pawnbroker, and jewelry store.
The building was landmarked by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2011 to preserve its architectural integrity and historical significance. Despite this, significant alterations were made by 2012, which impacted its original character.
Today, the site is home to a modern eight-story building constructed in more recent years, reflecting the evolution of the Lower East Side.
