44 Union Square East, known as the Tammany Hall Building, is a prominent neo-Georgian structure located at the southeast corner of Union Square East and East 17th Street in Manhattan, New York City. The building was erected between 1928 and 1929 by architects Thompson, Holmes & Converse and Charles B. Meyers for the Tammany Society, a historical political organization also known as Tammany Hall.
Designated as a city landmark in 2013, the building underwent significant renovations between 2016 and 2020, led by BKSK Architects. The landmarked north and west facades were preserved, while the interior was rebuilt to accommodate modern office and retail spaces. A notable addition is a glass dome inspired by the Lenape creation story, symbolizing a turtle shell, which adds approximately 30,000 square feet to the building.
The glass dome was structurally completed by July 2019 and the entire project was finished by October 2020. This design blend of historical preservation and contemporary innovation earned several architectural awards, including multiple awards from the Society of American Registered Architects and the American Institute of Architects.
