45-51 West 21st Street in Manhattan, NYC, is a historic building that began its journey when the Evangelical Lutheran Church stood on the site until 1901. The area was once lined with elegant brownstone residences but transitioned to commercial use as Fifth Avenue became more industrial.
Following the church's removal, two industrial loft buildings were constructed spanning Nos. 45 to 51. A major fire in 1908 heavily damaged one of these buildings. D. E. Sicher & Co., a prominent women's underwear manufacturer, purchased and renovated the damaged structure. Architects Goldwin, Starrett & Van Vleck designed the new six-story industrial loft, which was completed in 1909. The building featured red brick with limestone trim and expansive windows for natural light. It included a salesroom at ground level and office and factory spaces above.
D. E. Sicher & Co. not only renovated the building but also emphasized employee welfare by sponsoring education and economic advancement programs for its workers. The company's philanthropic efforts continued until its president, Dudley D. Sicher's death in 1939.
Over the years, the building transitioned from garment manufacturing to accommodating various tenants. By the 21st century, it housed office spaces and a significant nightclub on the ground floor. In recent years, a portion of the building has been occupied by a venue space named Duvet.
The building was formally completed in 1915 and stands as a testament to the northward migration of the manufacturing sector in early 20th-century New York. Its architectural and industrial significance have been preserved, with the cast iron details on the ground floor remaining intact.
