Constructed in 1916-1917, this 21-story neoclassical office tower at 63-65 Broadway was designed by James L. Aspinwall of Renwick, Aspinwall & Tucker. Originally built as headquarters for American Express (1874-1974), the concrete-and-steel structure features an H-shaped plan with central light courts and a distinctive Corinthian colonnade at its Broadway entrance.
Clad in white brick and terra cotta above a granite base, the building employs the tripartite base-shaft-capital composition typical of early 20th-century skyscrapers. The Broadway facade's double-story colonnade includes arched windows and an eagle insignia representing American Express.
The building contains one of Manhattan's few surviving early 20th-century light courts and retains original neo-classical detailing despite multiple ownership changes. Its 1999 renovation preserved historic elements while modernizing infrastructure.
65 Broadway, formerly known as the American Express Building, is a prominent 21-story office building located between Morris and Rector Streets in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City. Originally constructed in 1916-1917 for the American Express Company, it was designed by James L. Aspinwall of the architectural firm Renwick, Aspinwall & Tucker in the Neoclassical style. The building has a distinctive H-shaped plan, maximizing light and air with two light courts facing Broadway and Trinity Place.
Historically, American Express operated from this site since 1874 and occupied the building until 1974. Other notable occupants have included J. & W. Seligman & Co. and the American Bureau of Shipping. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the American Express Company Building as a landmark in 1995, and it is a contributing property to the Wall Street Historic District.
