History of 90 Trinity Place, Manhattan, NYC

90 Trinity Place is a post-modern building designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1975. Originally constructed in 1973, it has 15 stories and encompasses approximately 83,362 square feet. The building served as the home of the New York University Stern School of Business from the late 1970s until the early 1990s.

In 1993, the Board of Education of the City of New York leased 90 Trinity Place from NYU to accommodate the newly formed High School for Leadership and Public Service (now known as Leadership & Public Service High School). During the 1993–94 school year, while renovations were underway, the school temporarily shared three floors in the neighboring building at 100 Trinity Place.

The building is located in Lower Manhattan, near the Financial District, just three blocks north of the World Trade Center site, and very close to Wall Street. Its proximity to the World Trade Center made it one of the four Lower Manhattan high schools significantly affected by the events of September 11, 2001.

On September 11, the school was evacuated promptly after the second plane hit the South Tower. Debris from the attacks landed on the building’s roof, and the structure was later used as one of the morgue sites during the aftermath. Despite the proximity to the attacks, no students lost family members, and the building sustained no broken windows, although dust infiltrated inside due to window gasket failures. The evacuation was efficiently managed, and no serious injuries occurred during the escape.

Over the years, the building has undergone multiple alterations and renovations, maintaining its status as a significant educational facility in Manhattan. It stands as a symbol of resilience and community in the Financial District neighborhood.

90 Trinity Place is located in the Financial District of Manhattan, NYC, housing multiple educational institutions. The building, a former NYU Stern School of Business facility designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (1975), became home to Leadership & Public Service High School in 1993. Key features include being a 14-story postmodern structure three blocks south of the former World Trade Center site. It shares space with other schools and was notably used as a temporary morgue after the 9/11 attacks, sustaining minor structural damage from falling debris. Current tenants include Leadership & Public Service High School and A School Without Walls, both offering specialized curricula focused on college preparation and experiential learning.
