The original 7 World Trade Center was completed in 1987 and stood as a 47-story office building. It was clad in red granite masonry and occupied a trapezoidal footprint. The building was situated above a Consolidated Edison power substation, which imposed unique structural design constraints.
On September 11, 2001, the structure was substantially damaged by debris from the nearby North Tower collapse. Fires ignited on multiple lower floors and continued to burn uncontrolled throughout the afternoon. The building's internal fire suppression system lacked water pressure to fight the fires, leading to a progressive collapse at approximately 5:20 pm.
A new 7 World Trade Center was constructed on the site and opened in 2006.
