The Home Life Building, located at 251–257 Broadway in Lower Manhattan, NYC, is a historical structure consisting of two adjacent buildings. It is situated in the Tribeca and Civic Center neighborhoods near City Hall Park.
The original buildings were constructed between 1892 and 1894. The 16-story Home Life Insurance Company Building at 256 Broadway was designed by Napoleon LeBrun & Sons in the Renaissance Revival style. Adjacent to it, the Postal Telegraph Building at 253 Broadway, designed by George Edward Harding & Gooch in a neoclassical style, initially stood as a 14-story skyscraper. The latter featured a neo-Renaissance design with notable architectural elements like its recessed entrance and bold copper-bronze cornice.
Both buildings were completed in the spring of 1894, with the Postal Telegraph Company occupying the upper floors of 253 Broadway. A significant fire in 1898 damaged the Home Life Building but left the structural integrity intact. After the fire, fire codes were enhanced to require fireproofing for buildings over 75 feet.
In 1947, the Home Life Insurance Company purchased the Postal Telegraph Building, and the two structures were internally connected. The Home Life Building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1991.
