381-383 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, NYC, originally began as two separate houses in the mid-1800s. By the 1890s, both were converted into commercial buildings.
In 1881, No. 381 Fifth Avenue was home to C. Oliver Iselin and his wife, Frances Margaretta Garner. The house was owned by Frances' widowed mother and was the site of their wedding, attended by Manhattan's elite, including Caroline Schermerhorn Astor.
Next door at No. 383 lived the Haliburton Fales family, who were also prominent socially in New York.
By the late 1800s, these homes transitioned to commercial use. No. 381 became a site for various businesses, including Madame Leoncia Tierce's millinery shop and Julius Oehme's art galleries. After the death of Elizabeth J. Fales in 1900, No. 383 was taken over by the Musical Art Society.
In 1907, J.H. Peller purchased No. 381 and commissioned architect Samuel Sass to expand it into a 6-story building with a Parisian-styled storefront. By 1910, Peller leased No. 383 and created a mirror-image facade, integrating both buildings into a cohesive structure.
Throughout the 20th century, the building hosted a variety of tenants, including retailers like Cammeyer Shoes in the early 1900s and later, the Ritts Company's Fifth Avenue Tropical Shop. In the 1940s, the storefront of No. 383 was modernized by Bloch & Hesse.
Today, the lower floors of the building feature modernized storefronts, with NYC Gifts and My Smoke Shop occupying the ground floor.
