The building at 524 West 57th Street in Manhattan, New York City, originally served as a dairy depot for Sheffield Farms in the early 1900s. Constructed in 1912, it was part of the industrial infrastructure on the West Side near Hell's Kitchen.
CBS purchased the site in 1952 and transformed the building into what became known as the CBS Broadcast Center. It opened in the late 1950s as the CBS Production Center, moving many of the network's master control, film, videotape facilities, and four studios from its previous location in the Grand Central Terminal building.
By 1963, CBS began regular television use of the 57th Street facility. In July 1964, the CBS radio network relocated its offices and studios to the Broadcast Center, consolidating operations that were previously scattered across other Midtown locations. Later that year, the television network's master control also moved here.
The facility was recognized at the time as the largest self-contained radio and television production center in the United States and one of the most modern broadcasting plants globally, following a $14.5 million investment.
The Broadcast Center has been the main East Coast production hub for CBS, hosting CBS News, CBS Sports, flagship station WCBS-TV, and the independent station WLNY. Over the decades, the building has housed nationally syndicated shows and served as a key site for radio and television production, including CBS News Radio and master control functions for other programming.
Additional CBS studios in Manhattan, such as the Ed Sullivan Theater and the former General Motors Building studio, complement the Broadcast Center's production capabilities. Studio 57 within the building has hosted major CBS programs, including the second incarnation of CBS This Morning, and the CBS Evening News, which returned to the Center in 2025 after a period broadcasting from Washington, D.C.
