History of 20 Vesey Street, Manhattan, NYC
The building located at 20 Vesey Street in Manhattan, New York City, is famously known as the Old New York Evening Post Building. Constructed between 1906 and 1907, it was designed by architect Robert D. Kohn for Oswald Garrison Villard, who was the owner of the New York Evening Post at that time. This building is considered one of the few outstanding examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the United States.
The fourteen-story building features a stone veneer and is noted for its distinctive design, which evokes the boulevards of Paris without directly copying any existing structure. Prominent architectural elements include three tall bays of cast-iron framed bow windows separated by pale limestone piers, as well as an elaborate copper-covered mansard roof two stories high. Atop the roof are four sculpted figures representing the "Four Periods of Publicity," two of which were created by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, and two by Estelle Rumbold Kohn, the architect's wife.
The New York Evening Post occupied this building until 1926. Later known as the Garrison Building, it was designated a New York City Landmark in 1965 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. From 1980 to 1987, the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission was headquartered in the building.
Originally, the site at 20 Vesey Street had been part of the Greenwood family estate since 1790 before being purchased by The Evening Post for their new headquarters. When the building opened in 1907, a grand event was held to celebrate, recognizing the staff with awards and festivities.
Throughout its history, the building hosted various publishing firms and other businesses, including the publishers of The Nation and The Crisis magazines, associated with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The building thus played a notable role in the cultural and social advocacy of its era.
In addition to its architectural significance, 20 Vesey Street contributed to social progress, reflecting Oswald Garrison Villard’s inherited commitment to human and civil rights. Over the decades, the building accommodated a broad tenant mix and remained an important landmark in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District.
In the early 21st century, 20 Vesey Street was also part of the 9/11 Memorial Preview site while the permanent memorial was under construction, underscoring its continued civic significance.
