363 Lafayette Street is a prominent office building located in the NoHo Historic District of Manhattan, New York City. Designed by Morris Adjmi Architects, it was completed in 2018 with a unique fan-like structure that reflects the area's historical character while adding a modern architectural twist.
The building's design was influenced by the unusual wedge-shaped site, which resulted from the nineteenth-century extension of Lafayette Street. Each floor angles back slightly, creating a dynamic and bold silhouette. The terra-cotta cladding and decorative elements are reminiscent of the Flatiron Building and the historic store-and-loft structures in NoHo.
363 Lafayette features a one-story commercial storefront with exposure on three streets and utilizes materials such as brick piers, metal storefronts, and terra-cotta curtain walls. The interior boasts large flexible floor plans, tall ceilings, and industrial fixtures, offering a modern interpretation of traditional store-and-loft spaces.
Construction faced several challenges, including strict historic district regulations and a controversial site adjacent to artist Chuck Close's studio. The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the revised design in 2016, which eliminated initial two-story setbacks in favor of subtler floor-by-floor setbacks.
The building's design respects the neighborhood's past while embracing contemporary elements, making it a notable addition to the NoHo Historic District.
