254 West 54th Street in Manhattan, New York City, originally opened in 1927 as the Gallo Opera House. Designed by architect Eugene De Rosa, the building featured a 1,400-seat theater as part of a 16-story office building. The interior was designed by Ida Louise Killam with a gold, blue, and rose palette, including walnut paneling and a vaulted dome ceiling measuring 50 feet across. The theater originally contained lounges, promenades, and an opera museum below the main floors.
The Gallo Opera House opened with a production of La bohème by the San Carlo Grand Opera Company but faced financial difficulties after only a few years, leading to foreclosure in 1929. During the 1930s, the theater underwent several name changes and uses, including as the New Yorker Theatre and as a venue for the WPA Federal Music Project. It housed productions such as an all-black version of The Swing Mikado before falling vacant in the early 1940s.
Mid-century, the building was used by CBS as Studio 52 for radio and television broadcasts, with a seating capacity adjusted to 828 across three levels. In the late 1970s, the building gained international fame as Studio 54, a legendary nightclub that became a symbol of disco culture and nightlife, attracting celebrities and renowned figures of the era.
Following the nightclub era, the venue was reconverted back into a Broadway theater, currently operating with about 1,006 seats over two levels. The building stands as a significant cultural landmark in Midtown Manhattan, reflecting nearly a century of entertainment history from opera and theater to broadcast media and club culture.
