The idea for this building originated in 1954 as part of a plan to modernize Grand Central Terminal. Construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1963 at a cost of $100 million. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, Pietro Belluschi, and Walter Gropius, it was the largest privately owned office building in the world at the time of its opening.
